About 7am today, MUT time, Manchester United took on MLS side LA Galaxy for their first preseason friendly game in the US. The outcome was a 7-0 scoreline in favour of the Red Devils, but at the same time it was much ado about nothing in the end, given it was a friendly and United featured a near full-strength team and were barely threatened by the MLS side.
Yes, it was Van Gaal’s first official match in charge with the Red Devils, and as expected had ripped up the team and went on with a 3-4-3 formation, with 3 center-backs, Smalling, Jones and Evans, while Valencia and Shaw were deployed as wing backs to provide more punch to the attack by going forward. Rooney was captain for the match, while new boy Herrera impressed for his first game with his new teammates, almost giving us a glimpse of Scholes in him. Rooney (twice) and Welbeck had already given United a 3-0 lead by half-time, and as LVG rotated the squad, youngster Reece James, who came on for Shaw, also scored a double to impress the new manager, and Young added two more in the closing minutes to seal a good exhibition game. However, the real tests are coming for United, as they face AS Roma on Saturday, then play Inter Milan and finally Real Madrid to complete the tour.
