The final whistle for the English Premier League season 2008-2009 was given today (around 18hr GMT), and the facts of the day are as follows:
1. All top 4 clubs won their match.
2. The bottom 3 clubs have been relegated to the Championship.
3. Nicolas Anelka is the top scorer with 19 goals, 1 ahead of C.Ronaldo.
4. Man Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea are automatically qualified to the Champions League group stages, while Arsenal will have to go through the preliminary rounds.
5. Everton, Aston Villa and Fulham are entitled to play in the Europa League (former UEFA Cup- won this year by Shakhtar Donetsk from Ukraine).

Sunderland and Hull can thank their lucky stars for still being in the Premier League after both teams lost their matches. The former lost 2-3 to Chelsea, with Anelka scoring to become the top scorer (golden boots), while the latter lost to what the match commentator qualified as “Baby Devils” due to the young United squad sent out by Fergie today, where Gibson scored the only goal to give Man Utd the 3 points, and some scare to the Hull supporters.
Newcastle must be rueing their luck, since an own goal from Duff has relegated them, while they needed a point to escape, given that Hull had lost in the end, and Newcastle had a better goal difference. Along with them are relegated: Middlesborough, losers 2-1 to West Ham, while West Brom, already relegated since losing last week, managed a 0-0 draw vs. Blackburn, but not enough to escape relegation.
Elsewhere, formality matches for both Liverpool and Arsenal, the former winning 3-1 vs. Spurs, while the “Baby Gunners” won 4-1 against Stoke. Robbie Keane in fact scored against Liverpool, the club which sold him back to his old Spurs team in January, and thus denied Reina of keeping a clean sheet which would have equalled that of Van Der Sar 😀 Still the scousers managed to set a record on the number of points for a team in second position 😛 while Torres, Kuyt and Benayoun scored for the scousers.
2 teams confirmed to be promoted to the Premier league next season: Birmingham City and Wolverhampton, while the 3rd team to join will have to go thru the playoffs.
Only 2 matches remaining where we’ll see English teams in action: The Champions League finals, where Man Utd will face Barcelona on Wednesday in Rome & the FA Cup finals on next Saturday, where Chelsea will face Everton. May the best team win in either case…
So final whistle, the EPL takes a rest until next August, bravo to all the winners, and sympathies to the losers and those relegated, hope to see a more interesting season 2009-2010. Will it be finally Liverpool’s year or will it be United or a surprise packet from the other teams?? Answer in a few more months 😉 and not to mention the tranfer saga which will start shortly, with Tevez being announced at Liverpool, Benzema/Ribery at United and so on…
