The CL group stage return legs were played on Tuesday and Wednesday night, and yet again some surprises awaited the fans across Europe.
Manchester United, who were believed to steam-roll on their opponents of the night, CSKA Moscow, after winning the first encounter 1-0 away from home, were surprisingly held to a 3-3 draw, and were being led 1-3 after only 47 minutes played, courtesy of some bad defending and goal keeping from the United players. The fans had to wait for the final 10 minutes to finally see United make a comeback through Scholes and a deflected shot from Valencia, while Owen had equalized only for a couple of minutes in the first half for 1-1. However, even with the draw United have qualified for the next stage, and the final qualifying place will be played between CSKA and Wolfsburg.
Chelsea as well drew their game, but away to Athletico Madrid, 2-2 the final score, with Drogba scoring for the Blues, while Aguero was the scorer at the other end, but Chelsea are already qualified as well.
Liverpool’s poor run continued as they only managed to get a draw in France vs. Lyon, Babel scoring on 83 minutes, but Lyon’s reply came from Lisandro in the dying seconds of normal time. Lyon still top their group, leaving Liverpool on the verge of an early exit from the competition, unless they can produce a miracle in the remaining 2 games to qualify.
Arsenal were the only English team to manage a win, and they did it in style as well over AZ Alkmaar, with a 4-1 convincing victory. Fabregas led by example for the gunners as he scored twice, while Nasri and Diaby got on the scoresheet as well for the gunners.
