Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs were the main men for United as the former scored a hat-trick (although 2 of them from penalties), while the latter scored his 100th Premier League goal to cap a pulsating encounter against Portsmouth at Fratton Park, 1-4 the final score in the Red Devils’ favor, but it was a hard fought win, don’t be influenced by the scoreline 😉
Portsmouth started as the better team, and with Avram Grant taking over the managerial role, they seemed to be playing brilliant football but lacked the finishing touch which could have buried United early in the game. Kusczak was also in great form for United as he denied Portsmouth many times throughout the game, with United’s defence on the brink of exploding.
The opener came from Rooney on 25th minute against all odds, as Michael Brown clipped him from behind in the box, but although the foul was not evident, the ref pointed to the spot and Rooney slotted home past Begovic. However United’s lead lasted only 7 minutes as Portsmouth won a penalty of their own following a tug on the of Piquionne from Vidic, and Boateng slotted home at the other end to give Portsmouth a deserved equalizer. United were losing their grasp on the game as Portsmouth continued to raid their backline, and it was Kuszczak who saved the Red Devils from going further behind.
The second half started well for United however, as within only 3 minutes, on the 48th minute, Rooney scored his second following a brilliant pass from Giggs. Giggs was again involved minutes later, on the 54th to be precise, as Piquionne brought him down in the box, and penalty was awarded yet again, with Rooney stepping up to complete his hat-trick. Portsmouth did not give up and continued to harass United, but the killer blow came on 87th minute, as Giggs placed a freekick brilliantly past the keeper, scoring his 100th goal in the Premier League, ahead of his 36th birthday tomorrow. At the other end, Utaka nearly scored with a scissors kick, but Kuszczak was able to palm the ball onto the cross bar and out, holding on for the 1-4 scoreline.
