The first leg of the quarter-final game opposing Bayern Munich to Manchester United saw the former take a well deserved 2-1 lead to Old Trafford next week, while in the meantime Rooney seems to have sprained his ankle in the last minute of added time, an injury which comes at a very bad time as United will face Chelsea in the weekend and then play the second leg of the Champions League quarter final.
Manchester United were the ones to score first though, and it was a quick goal in the first minute itself following a foul on Nani, who took the freekick near the corner flag, and amazingly Rooney was unmarked in the penalty area and tapped the ball into the roof of the net. But from there onwards it was all Bayern Munich, and Van Der Sar was called many times to make some important saves in the first half. 0-1 at half time, the second half saw Bayern pressing for the equalizer as United just stepped back allowing them to dominate the game, and the equalizer eventually came on the 76th minute, as Ribery’s freekick, following Neville’s hand ball , took a deflection off Rooney and left Van Der Sar helpless on his line.
Bayern continued to threaten and Gomez nearly scored the second but it took a super save from Van Der Sar again to deny him, but only for some minutes, as in the last seconds of added time, Olic gave them the winner after Evra got mixed up in the box, and failed to promptly clear the danger, thus allowing Olic to rob the ball and slot coolly past Van Der Sar. Man Utd will now have a big task at home to qualify, may be also without Rooney, as this Bayern team has shown that they are technically superior than what United produced today, and they may prove to be too good in the end as they are still seeking revenge for that 1999 Champions League final defeat at the hands of Sheringham and Solskjaer, and this first leg win is only part of that revenge I think 🙄
The other game for the quarter final today was a totally French connection one, as Lyon faced Bordeaux, and Lyon won 3-1. Tonight (31st Mar.), 2 more games to be played, and specially the most awaited Arsenal-Barcelona game, where the style of football is almost the same for both, and it will be difficult to predict a winner in that one.
