Red Devils earn their ‘Spurs’

It was an unconvincing display by the defending champions at Old Trafford against a Spurs team which came from back-to-back wins against two of the other big fours, Arsenal and Chelsea, but Giggs (twice from the penalty spot) and Nani were on hand to deliver the goods (Rooney was not in the team, while Berbaflop was and did not deliver anything special 🙄 ), while King had netted the equalizer at 1-1 at the other end, but which only turned out to be a consolation goal for Spurs as United won 3-1.

The first half was rather dull, with no real attacking threat from either team, and the first opportunity for United came only on after the half-hour mark when Valencia had a tame shot straight to Gomes. Berbatov had a chance minutes later, but crashed his shot against King. Spurs were rather subdued as well, with only Pavlyuchenko having a shot deflected off Evra.

The second half was a little more quick paced, and it took only 13 minutes of play before United found the way to the net. Berbatov provided a back-heeled pass into Evra’s path, and the latter was tackled harshly by Assou-Ekotto  in the box, resulting in a penalty. Giggs stepped up in the absence of Rooney, and although Gomes went the right way, he could do little to spot the veteran from scoring. But Spurs were back on again, as both Valencia then Evra were taken off, the former injured, while the latter started vomiting on the pitch, and Spurs brought on Lennon and Gudjonsen for a more offensive impact. The equalizer came shortly afterwards, on the 70th minute, when King rose easily past Carrick to meet Bale’s corner, and Rafael was too short to acrobatically clear his line, although if he had remained standing by the post he could have cleared easily.

Spurs sent on Crouch in the attempt to nail the Red Devils, but Sir Alex responded by sending on Macheda, and the young Italian provided an almost instant impact, as he collected a pass from Fletcher and dispatched it neatly to Nani, who came racing in past Huddlestone with a quick control and neatly lobbed the ball past Gomes to give United the lead again. United fans were still celebrating that second goal when minutes later Nani was involved again, but this time Palacios fouled him in the box, and Giggs was up against Gomes for the second penalty of the match. He did not falter as Gomes yet again dived the right way, and United could comfortably hold to on to the two goal cushion to claim the first spot of the league while waiting for Chelsea to play tomorrow, and in case of a win to go back on top yet again 😈
