Manchester United started their North American tour in Toronto Canada last night with a win against Scottish club Celtic, and although the score line read 3-1 in United’s favor at the final whistle, it was a hard-fought win for the Red Devils as 2 young Devils came on from the bench to score the winners. It was also the Red Devils first game in their new home kit, with AON replacing AIG as sponsor.
Smalling made his first start for Man Utd following his January transfer from Fulham, while Rooney, Evra, Vidic, Park and Hernandez, who played in the World Cup, are still enjoying their holidays, although IMHO Rooney barely deserves any holiday following his awful world cup display 👿
United started rather well, with both Da Silva brothers causing some trouble on either flanks, along with Giggs and Obertan, while Berbatov started along with Diouf upfront. United missed some opportunities to open the score early on, but Berbatov eventually found the way to goal on the 34th minute as Obertan and Diouf combined to set him up. Celtic could have equalized before half-time but United managed to hold on to the 1-goal lead. However Celtic did find the goal they were after 6 minutes after restart as Smalling committed a foul in the box, and Samaras stepped up to dispatch the ball in the roof of the net with Van Der Sar beaten.
Celtic pressed on but Van Der Sar saved from Fortune, and it was only on the 79th minute that United got the lead back again, as Berbatov found substitute Welbeck to slot home, and Cleverley eventually sealed the win on 86th minute as his 20 yard shot deflected off Odea and past his helpless keeper.
United’s next friendly will be on 22nd July against Philadelphia Union.
