Manchester United suffered their first defeat in their North American tour against KC Wizards, 2-1 the final score in favor of the American side. It was a mixed United side which started this game, with the emerging young players given their chance to be partnered by the elders like Giggs and Scholes, but still the question arises whether these young players are apt to play at high level so soon, or is it not better for Alex Ferguson to try get some quality players while the transfer window is still open.
According to some reports Sir Alex afterwards blamed his young players for the defeat, but according to me this is very harsh since many of them are still learning the trade at high level, and lack the ability to impose themselves just yet, unlike the young Gunners who play week in week out in the Premier League and also more often in the domestic Cups.
KC Wizards took only 11 minutes to open the score through Arnaud. United were put under pressure as they tried to keep up with the Americans, and Smith could have doubled the lead but failed to connect with the pass destined for him. Then Gibson gave his team-mates some fear as he headed a freekick just wide of his own-goal. United came back in the game on the 41st minute, although controversially, as Berbatov seemed to be brought down by Conrad, and the latter was even sent off for what seemed to be a regular tackle, but the referee decided otherwise and United were awarded a penalty kick. Berbatov slotted home, but 2 minutes later, KC Wizards were in the lead once again as Kamara rose to head a corner, and the ball struck the bar and went in, although not wholly, but still a goal was given, may be the referee making up for his silly penalty decision minutes before.
The second half saw United press for an equalizer, which never came for them, and thus the 10-men KC Wizards team held on for a good win against the Red Devils. Next stop will be against the MLS All Stars on the 29th and hopefully Sir Alex will have learnt a lesson by that time…
