Judgement day is nearing for Sir Alex it seems as Manchester United this time conceded yet another draw but at home, against a battling West Brom side, but also courtesy of a horrendous mistake by Van Der Sar to allow the Baggies take one point from Old Trafford. It seems United are following in Liverpool’s steps, as they too are struggling to produce results, and the players were even jeered by the fans at some point in the game.
United however were in control for the first half, as Chicharito found the net after only 5 minutes, as Carson failed to deal cleanly with Nani’s freekick. The latter was on the scoresheet himself on the 25th minute after a good one-two with Berbatov. Sir Alex at that time may have thought that leaving Rooney on the bench was not a mistake, but little did he know what awaited him in the second half.
Chicharito and Vidic failed to secure the match as the second half started, and West Brom made them pay for it soon afterwards. Evra deflected Brunt’s freekick as he challenged to try win the ball, and the ball went goalwards, and despite Van Der Sar’s desperate attempt to palm it out, the ball was already over the line, and accounted as an own goal for Evra got the last touch. The punishment did not end there, as minutes later, what should have been a routine catch for Van Der Sar as the ball was floated in the box, turned to disaster instead. The veteran keeper inexplicably failed to handle the ball properly and it dropped Tchoyi who did not need an invitation to slot home.
Rooney was then called upon in an attempt to win the match, but instead the Baggies were the ones causing United all trouble, as United could no longer develop their passing game and instead went for individual glory with the likes of Nani and Berbatov, and even after winning a controversial freekick in the box for a supposedly back-pass catch by Carson, United failed to make effective use of it, as Rooney saw his shot blocked after Nani had found him unmarked. In the end United had to settle for their 5th draw already, and Arsenal winning against Birmingham at the same time meant United fell behind them in the table rankings as well, with Chelsea playing in a a few minutes, and Man City playing tomorrow to may be open the gap between them and the former 2.
