Barcelona are the kings of Europe once again, and humiliated Manchester United yet again after the 2009 final, as the Catalans won easily by a 3-1 scoreline at Wembley, courtesy of Pedro, Messi and Villa, while Rooney scored one for United, but which could only act as a consolation for the Red Devils, while the sexy and quick football displayed by Barcelona players ripped the United squad apart throughout the game. My heart goes out to Van Der Sar though, as this was his last game in his career, and he had to fetch the ball 3 times from the net, despite making some good saves as well to keep out further goals from Barça.
United started the first 5 minutes brightly, but after that it was all Barça, as they got into gear and started tormenting the United backline, which eventually gave way on the 27th minute, as Xavi found Pedro unmarked, and the latter slid the ball past Van Der Sar for the opener, sending the Catalan fans into ecstasy. However, United responded soon afterwards, despite a slight hint of offside when the ball was played to Giggs, but not given, and he in turn found Rooney to hit home the equalizer. This goal gave some hope of a good display but Barça were unmoved as they took control of the ball again till half time.
The second half continued on the same basis as the 1st one, and on the 54th minute, the inevitable footballing god, Leo Messi, wrote his name on the scoresheet, as he took his chance from outside the box, and past Van Der Sar again, the poor man having a nightmare in his last game for Manchester United and career. The show was not yet finished however, as Villa found the net on the 69th minute to seal the win, and downed United for good. Even Nani’s introduction to the match changed very little, and United had to bow out infront of the Spanish giants yet again as in 2009.
For me however, it does seem that SAF got his tactics all wrong again, playing Giggs in midfield yet again was a pure flop, as for Chicharito, well he’s not yet ready for such big games, and although Berbatov was completely missing from the squad today, the likes of Owen or Anderson or Fletcher would have been better instead of lining up the Mexican alone upfront with Rooney behind, at least with Anderson or Fletcher the midfield could have been more tight. Chicharito barely posed a threat to Barça backline, while Valencia looked like a complete waste on the right, fouling Barça players so many times, and lucky to still finish the game with only a yellow, when it could have easily been a red for him in the first half itself. Time to bring in some fresh blood and ones who are willing to die for the shirt instead of displaying such shit football like giving up without giving a fight today!!!
