Manchester United continued their impressive start of the EPL season 2011-2012, this time by seeing off Chelsea at Old Trafford on a 3-1 scoreline, and equalling a club record of 18 successive home wins in the process. United were 3-0 ahead at half time, with goals from Smalling (8th minute), despite a slight hint of offside, as he rose to head home Young’s freekick. Nani made it 2-0 on the 37th minute as he blasted a shot past Cech from 20 yards out and into the top corner. Rooney then scored the third on the 45th minute following a rush from Jones into the Chelsea area, and a clearance by Terry saw Nani block it into the path of Rooney, and he swept home the third. Meanwhile, Chelsea had some opportunities of their own, as Ramires was twice denied by De Gea before half time.
The second half saw Chelsea come back all guns blazing, and Torres pulled one back on the 46th minute to put pressure on United, and indeed it looked like the Blues could have got back in the match, as United started to play deep at the back. However, United got a lifeline at the other end, as Nani was tripped by Bosingwa in the box, and Rooney stepped up to take the resulting penalty. However, he gave us a remake of Terry’s miss in 2008 at Moscow, as he slipped at the last moment, and saw the ball hit his left foot while falling and going well wide of goal, despite Cech diving in the correct direction. Another incredible miss followed soon, this time by Torres, as he rounded De Gea, but at the crucial moment, may be he did not look where the empty goal was, and instead shot wide, and was rightly humiliated by the Stretford End crowd as he bundled the ball into them instead of in the net. The match remained at 3-1, despite a late chance for Berbatov, but his shot was cleared off the line by Cole, thou it has to be said Rooney’s pass towards him was not perfect.
