Defensive mistakes put United in an unholy mess

Two defensive mistakes proved to be costly for the Red Devils against Benfica last night, as they will now have to avoid defeat against Basel in the last game to expect qualification to the last 16, else be dropped to the Europa League. United were shocked in the opening minutes itself, as Jones scored an own-goal in an attempt to defend on the 3rd minute itself. Benfica threatened again, but United looked to fightback, and eventually found the net on the 30th minute when Berbatov headed Nani’s cross in. Young could have put United ahead minutes later, but his shot was saved. United put the pressure on and were rewarded in the second half, as Fletcher bundled in the rebound after his first effort was saved on the 59th minute. However, Benfica were back in it minutes later, as De Gea failed to clear properly, the resulting ball intercepted by an opposition player, and Ferdinand, in turn, trying to clear, could only give the ball to Aimar who made no mistake for the visitors. United had a chance to win the game with 12 minutes left, but Berbatov volleyed high, leaving the Red Devils in a dangerous situation of exiting the Champions League should they fail to wake up in Switzerland.
