While almost every United fan thought the title was coming home rather easily, Wigan completely disillusioned them as they gave United a real fight, and claimed the 3 points thanks to Maloney’s second half strike which left United reactionless, while in the meantime Man City were destroying West Brom to close in the gap to 5 points, with 5 games remaining, including the much awaited Manchester derby. Wigan took the game from the start, and never went wrong in their approach, as United were contenting themselves to defend, and rarely troubled Al Habsi at the other end. Wigan, which was victim of some bad refereeing decisions recently, this time got one in their favor, as a corner kick was awarded on the 50th minute, when in fact it was a Wigan player who took the ball over the line. The resulting corner was badly defended however, and Maloney took full opportunity to let one fly from the the edge of the box and past De Gea. Wigan from there held on to record a historical win, while United see the blue gloom coming towards them yet again as the noisy neighbours start believing in the title once more following their 4-0 win over West Brom.
