Manchester United kept their nerves against Aston Villa earlier today, as the Red Devils restored their 5-points lead over City with a 4-0 win over Villa, with Rooney hitting a brace, while Nani and Welbeck scored one each to make sure there was no way back for the Villains, and increasing the belief for a 20th title this season.
The game was barely started it might be said, as Ashley Young went down rather theatrically in truth, after a slight contact with Clark in the box on the 6th minute. The ref however did not hesitate one second to blow for the penalty, and Rooney stepped up to send Given the wrong way to open the score. United confiscated the ball from there on, but not really troubling Villa, until the 43rd minute, when Evra’s cross was allowed to run through the defense due to some bad defending from Villa’s players, and Welbeck rushed in to tackle the ball home and doubling United’s lead.
The second half saw Villa come close through Heskey, but De Gea tipped his header for a corner, and we had to wait until the 73rd minute to finally see another goal, this time Rooney with the help of a little deflection netted his second, and was immediately subbed to let Berbatov have some play time, as he was not looking impressive yet again today, and this is his second substitution in a row following the Wigan match. Finally, on the 90th minute, Nani got himself on the scoresheet as he tucked in Evans’ pass to wrap up the match, and making a good comeback to the team following his 2 month or so absence due to injury. The title is getting closer, but United need to keep delivering the goods before they can eventually start celebrating.
And a special thought going out to the Morosini family, whose son, Piermario Morosini, died yesterday during the Italian Serie B game, where he collapsed on the pitch due to a cardiac arrest, and unfortunately, unlike Muamba, he did not get the required treatment on time, and was declared as dead when he was taken to the hospital. The Italian federation duly postponed all games scheduled for this weekend.
