More fear than harm

Robin Van Persie scored his first United goal earlier today to give the Red Devils a win on their first home game after the setback at Everton last Monday, but again it was a close call for the Red Devils as Fulham gave them a big scare but eventually they managed to hold on and claim the 3 points with a 3-2 final score. Bad news however, Rooney will be unavailable for about 4 weeks as he suffered a nasty injury resulting from a contact with Rodallega, a big gash near his right knee, which means more injury problems to United given the backline is already depleted, but fortunately the same cannot be said for the front line with the likes of Chicharito, Welbeck and Berbatov waiting in the wings, and new boy Henriquez if he gets his work permit to start play for United.

United were caught cold in the opening minutes, 2nd minute to be precise, as Fulham won a freekick on the right edge of the box, which Ruiz coolly passed to an unmarked Duff in the box and the latter made no mistake to slot the ball past the diving figure of De Gea. However this goal acted as the wake-up call United needed, and the Red Devils took control of the match from there. The crowd did not have to wait long as United’s equalizer came on the 10th minute. Evra sent in a quality cross in the box after seeing Van Persie making the call, and the latter made no mistake to guide the ball with his favourite left foot past Schwarzer. Kagawa, who was excellent on Monday, was again at his best playing behind RvP, and was involved in United’s second goal as the scorer on the 35th minute. RvP’s corner was not cleared properly, and Cleverley lashed in a shot which Schwarzer could only parry into Kagawa’s path, and the latter made no mistake to score. United were threatening again as Rafael had a goal disallowed for offside, but he was rewarded on the 41st minute, as Young’s cross picked him out perfectly to nod in the ball from the far post, and give Usain Bolt something to smile on in the guest area as half time loomed.

The second half however was not brilliant from United, as may be they thought the 2-goal advantage was enough, and Fulham took full opportunity to indeed get one back. De Gea, who was excellent so far, came out in an attempt to punch a cross clear, but missed the ball completely, and Vidic, trying to get to the cross as well could only see the ball clip his leg as he was falling over and roll into the back of the net. Fulham gained more confidence from there on, and United had to get back to defend, even RvP, and Ruiz came very close in the closing minutes of the game to grab an equalizer, but fortunately De Gea covered up for his mistake and kept the ball out, as United ended with 10 men after Rooney had to be stretchered off.

Sir Alex has stated in an interview that there will be no more signings, but to be honest he still needs to get a solid CB to partner Vidic as the others are on the treatment table, and also one box-to-box midfield to help the team keep the ball and provide good distribution, someone which Fulham had today in Dembele as he gave the United players a hard time throughout the game. With the current squad attitude it will be difficult to claim back the title and try win other trophies, as some of the players are still raw talents and need more polishing, while it does seem also that to play RvP and Rooney together could not click well with the current formation, unless a change in formation and tactics is brought about to accommodate both in the starting 11.
