Van Persie to the rescue

Manchester United had to play it the hard way yet again in their 2nd CL group match against CFR Cluj, as the Red Devils had to fight back from being a goal down early on in the first half to eventually see off their Romanian counterparts on a 1-2 score, with RvP being in the mix again to deliver the goods from 2 assists by Rooney. SAF’s pre-match warning just fell to deaf ears again, as following a quick counter-attack on the 14th minute, Sougou delivered a perfect pass to an unmarked Kapetanos in United’s box and the latter slotted home easily.  United however woke up quickly this time unlike against Spurs, and pressed Cluj back until Rooney delivered a freekick on the 29th minute right for Van Persie to lob it with his shoulder past the keeper to equalize. 1-1 at halftime, the second half barely kicked-off when Rooney yet again delivered a beauty of a pass for RvP in the box, and the latter squeezed the ball past the onrushing keeper on the 49th minute. United kept possession without being too adventurous, but had De Gea to thank in the closing minutes as he saved brilliantly from Bastos’ diving header to keep the 1-goal advantage, while earlier he had to tip over Cadu’s header which seemed goal-bound as well.

Yet, will United stop gifting goals to the opposition is another question which trots in the mind, and the fragility of the defense can also be the result of SAF not playing with a definite keeper as well, as he keeps the turnover between Lindegaard and De Gea active, and we all know that every keeper has his own ways of dealing with the defense when the opposition attacks, and that defenders as well rely on their keepers to help ease the pressure. If the correct stability is found at the back then United will surely become very difficult to score against from an opposition team’s point of view, but until then we’ll have to content ourselves with such performances and some scrappy wins 😈
