AON Tour 2013: Manchester United escape with a lucky draw in Osaka

AON Osaka 2013Manchester United had a close encounter with another defeat earlier today in Osaka, as they faced Cerezo Osaka in a pre-season friendly in Japan. United created several chances in the opening minutes but were down 1-0 after 33 minutes when Smalling lost the ball and Kenyu Sugimoto found the net for the hosts, with the scoreline not budging until half-time.

Meanwhile,  Anderson came on for Jones, who took a knock in the first half, and United managed to win a penalty on the 52nd minute, although it looked like a dive. Kagawa stepped up to take, but the keeper kept his effort out, into a corner kick, whereby Kagawa got a chance to redeem himself against his former club, as he controlled Giggs low cross, and beat the keeper on the turn. But United got caught again on the 63rd minute, when Takumi Minamino fired one from 22 yards and into Lindegaard’s top left-hand corner. United pushed on for the equalizer, and were eventually rewarded in added time when Zaha slotted home Anderson’s pass into an empty net to save Moyes’ blushes, and share the Yanmar Premium Cup with the Japanese team.

United line-up:

Lindegaard; Rafael (Fabio 79), Smalling, Ferdinand, Büttner (Evra 79); Young (Lingard 79), Jones (Anderson 46), Giggs (Cleverley 79), Kagawa (Zaha 58); Welbeck, van Persie (Januzaj 69).
