David Moyes’ quest for a silverware was finally fruitful after RvP struck twice in the Community Shield game today against Wigan to give Moyes something to cheer about as serious business starts next weekend with the season 2013-14 kicking off as United will try to defend and keep the title at Old Trafford. United were not that brilliant thou, but did capitalize with their 2 chances created to score and wrap up the win. RvP was back in the team after being left out on Friday night, but still there was no Rooney in the squad, being “punished” it seems by Moyes for wanting out of the club, and it does seem his adventure with United is over, unless a surprising turn-around occurs.
Robin Van Persie found the net after only 6 minutes, as he rose to place a header past Carson’s right-hand side following a very good build up and a perfect cross from Evra. Although United kept possession for a longer time than Wigan, they did not create any meaningful danger and the score was 1-0 at halftime, with however Rafael limping off with what looked like a hamstring injury early on in the game.
Wigan tried to press early on in the second half, but it was United which ended scoring at the other end, with Van Persie claiming the goal, as his shot took a lucky deflection off Perch and found the left corner, while the initial shot looked like sailing straight to the keeper’s grasp. With several changes then operated by both sides, United were happy to keep the ball in Wigan’s half, and after the final whistle no-one must have been happier than Moyes as he claims his first silverware.
