Manchester United boosted their CL hopes today with a 3-1 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford, with Herrera scoring in each half, and Rooney scoring a stunning volley, while Benteke scored a consolation for Villa, with De Gea not being at his best for this one by allowing the ball to creep underneath him. United had much of the possession, but had to wait for the 43rd minute to find the breakthrough, as Blind fed a pass to Herrera in the box, and the latter drove a low shot across goal, with the keeper reacting too late. The second half was well under way when Rooney found the net on the 79th minute, as he controlled Di Maria’s cross and turned around to volley home the second goal. However, United were caught out a minute later, as Benteke’s effort crept in past De Gea following a corner kick, and United looked disorganized for some minutes before eventually getting back in the game, and Herrera added a third for United in added time, as Mata’s pass looked intended for Falcao, but the latter allowed the ball to run through and Herrera slid the ball into the net.
It was a well deserved win, which temporarily puts United in third place, still a point behind Arsenal, while City play on Monday night and can climb up to second place once again if they win. If United want to beat City next week, then they will need to up the tempo to ensure victory, as despite today’s win, there’s still work for the staff to bring this team to its best level.
