Bad news never come alone, and there were 2 today for all those connected with Manchester United. First bad news was the passing away of Rio Ferdinand’s wife Rebecca (R.I.P), who lost her battle with cancer, and the second bad news is that United lost their third game in a row, this time on home soil, as The Baggies of West Brom claimed all 3 points and set some doubt on United’s European future.
The first half of this match had nothing special, except 3 harmless attempts from Van Persie, who started his first game since being out for some time with injury, and it was the usual passing the ball around without creating any clear-cut opportunity for the Red Devils, as the first half ended 0-0. The second half proved that LVG is indeed a madcap manager, as he opted to make RvP play in midfield alongside Rooney, while allowing Fellaini to be the target man upfront, and United once again paid a heavy price as they got caught at the back with a quick counter by West Brom, and McNair causing a dangerous free-kick from a foul. Brunt was given instructions by old boy Fletcher, but his kick took a malicious deflection off teammate Olsson standing in the wall, and completely wrong-footed De Gea in goal, who could only follow the ball with his eyes as West Brom made the break-thru on the 63rd minute, the goal being awarded to Olsson in the end. United then got the chance to level the score from the spot, but Myhill saved RvP’s penalty kick, and despite late efforts from United to get on level terms, The Baggies held on for another famous victory at Old Traffod, while United now see the gap behind them closing slowly as Liverpool is only 4 points behind in 5th place, and Spurs play tomorrow and are also challenging for a European spot.
