After 3 games without a win and without scoring, Manchester United finally managed to do both in today’s game, but were pushed to their limits by the high flying Eagles, and with a little unintentional help from the referee as well for the first goal scored. United started the first half very well, with Blind’s shot forcing Speroni into a save, helped by his upright on the way, but United found the net on the 19th minute, although controversially, as referee Oliver deemed Dann had blocked the ball with his arm following Young’s cross in the box, and a penalty was awarded to the Red Devils. Much to almost everyone’s surprise, it was Mata who stepped up to take it, given that Rooney should have been the one to do so as RvP was supposedly out with a virus and missing in action for this game. Speroni got a touch on the resulting penalty kick, but not enough to keep the ball out. United however looked vulnerable at the back but still managed to keep the 1-goal lead till half time despite losing Shaw with an injury, replaced by the returning Evans, while De Gea kept the Eagles at bay.
The second half was much another story, as Rooney did not return back, as he was already limping in the first one itself, and was replaced by Falcao, while Palace looked more threatening with United looking disorganized. There was not too much to wait for to see the Eagles capitalize, as Smalling caused a freekick on the edge of the box, and substitute Puncheon gave his team the required punch, with a little help from Blind in the wall, as his shot deflected off the latter’s head to beat De Gea for the equalizer. De Gea was called into action yet again as he saved Murray’s shot with his right hand, and it looked as if United were to concede yet another defeat as the pressure kept mounting. However, United got lucky at the other end on the 78th minute, as Speroni came out unnecessarily to try meet Young’s cross, collided with his own defender, and the ball flew straight to Fellaini to apply the finishing header. United still had to hold on as Palace tried to break at the other end, but De Gea this time saved with his leg to keep the ball out. With this 1-2 win, United are now on the brink of qualifying for the CL, should Chelsea win against Liverpool tomorrow, as for the time being 7 points separate these 2 teams, with now 2 games left for this season for most teams, while Chelsea for their part are already champions for this season, only the official ceremony needs to be held to present them the trophy.
