Louis Van Gaal took a real risk today as the Red Devils faced bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford in one of the gigantic clash of the season, as Rooney was forfeited due to injury in training and could be missing for some more days, and with no proven striker available at the club despite Martial’s colossal transfer, it was Fellaini who had the role of leading the attack alongside Memphis and Mata. While the first half was a disappointing one for both sets of fans, with Liverpool resolving to defensive tactics while United kept the ball but failed to really trouble them, the second half was a more livelier one with the introduction of Young for Memphis as the match resumed, and it took United only 4 minutes to find the net, following Clyne’s foul on Young at the edge of the box. Mata delivered a low cross across the box to Blind, and the latter curled in a brilliant effort for the opener. De Gea, back in goal after his transfer saga, gave United some scare after failing to clear his lines properly, and fortunately Smalling was on hand to clear the resulting danger. De Gea however was called into action to deny Ings, then Blind cleared off the line as Skrtel’s header looked to creep in.
Liverpool however found themselves further behind on the 70th minute, as Gomez brought down Herrera in the box, and the latter stepped up to do justice for himself from the resulting spotkick, blasting the ball into the roof of the net to give Mignolet no chance of keeping out the shot. Liverpool continued to press thou and Benteke eventually found the net on the 84th minute with a brilliant acrobatic kick which gave De Gea no chance of keeping a cleansheet for his return. However, Liverpool’s joy was short-lived, as new boy Martial added a third for United on the 86th minute. Picked out by Young outside the box, he slalomed his way past 3 defenders before eventually finishing coolly past Mignolet to announce himself in style to the Old Trafford faithfuls, and to all those who knew little or nothing about him. 3-1 the final score, United now have to concentrate on the upcoming CL match during the week as they travel to PSV on Tuesday night for their first group game.
