Southampton shocked Manchester United today at Old Trafford, as the Saints beat the Red Devils on a 1-0 scoreline with a goal scored thru new signing Austin on the 87th minute, while the home fans booed at the final whistle to show their discontent. Southampton deserved their victory, while United were desperately poor, devoid of inspiration or guile, lacking passion and intensity. They looked like a team going through the motions. They looked like a team that does not believe.
The first half was stripped bare of excitement. Wayne Rooney managed a couple of shots but were well wide. Fellaini nearly created a chance for Shane Long by miscuing an attempted clearance high into the air towards his own goal. United were booed off at half time and no wonder. They have now failed to score a goal in the first 45 minutes for 11 games in succession. The match looked to be heading towards a stalemate until Austin popped up to head Ward-Prowse’s cross past De Gea. This defeat means United lose more ground on the 4th spot in the table, and are under threat as West Ham plays later today, and a win can see the Red Devils drop to 6th place once again with the Hammers leaping over them.
