The much awaited confrontation between the Pogba brothers was finally eclipsed by Zlatan last night as the Red Devils hosted Saint Etienne for their Europa League first-leg tie, and the striker netted a hat-trick to ensure the Red Devils have a good lead to defend when they travel to France.
United had a shaky start in the opening minutes as the backline struggled, but they got a grip on the game as the minutes went on, and Martial was first to threaten but not enough to see the ball in the net. Zlatan then won a freekick on the edge of the box, which he stepped up to take, and with the help of a deflection opened the score on the 15th minute. United looked to double the lead before half time, but were unable to hit the target again despite having a couple of chances.
United looked more enterprising as the second half started, with Mourinho sending on Lingard to replace Fellaini, while Zlatan had a goal ruled out for offside. United kept on the pressure as Martial, Valencia and Pogba went close, but Zlatan made sure the second goal arrived on the 75th minute, as he was gifted with a simple finish after Rashford’s good run in the box. Lingard then missed the chance to make it 3-0, but the miss was soon wiped out as Zlatan obtained a penalty on the 88th minute, and converted easily to make sure the Red Devils have a comfortable lead for the return leg.
