The forward duo comprising of Rooney and Martial was brought out of the cold today by Mourinho as United prepared life after Zlatan, who was seriously injured during the Europa League match and who is supposedly out until Jan 2018, and both forwards found themselves on the scoresheet against Burnley as the Red Devils kept their hopes for a top 4 finish alive.
The Red Devils, without both Rashford and Zlatan, had Martial and Rooney sent on to make up the attacking partnership, along with Lingard, and while United did not threaten much in the early minutes of the game, Martial found the net on the 21st minute following an incredible run from United’s half, supported by a quick link-up with Herrera on the break, and the latter’s pinpoint pass was calmly finished by the former to open the score. Rooney added a second on the 39th minute, with Pogba involved at the beginning of the action as he his nonchalance way he managed to keep hold of the ball after a defensive mix-up between the Burnley players, and he released Martial on the left side. Martial managed to scramble the ball past the keeper, and Rooney was left with the task of poking the ball in with the help of a deflection off the defender.
United tried to put the game to bed in the second half, with Pogba trying his luck from long range, but it was Bailly who was providential at the back as Burnley tried to get one back, but the central defender was a real rock today, and kept out the threats whenever Burnley looked close to find the net, ensuring that De Gea kept a cleansheet for his return as well in goal. The 2-goal lead was enough in the end to ensure the Red Devils claimed the 3 points, putting them 1 point behind rivals City, but who were involved in an FA Cup game today instead of the EPL.
