ICC: De Gea shows his worth

ICC-MUFC-RM

The epic match between the CL champions and the Europa League champions finally turned into the latter’s favour, as the Red Devils managed a 2-1 win over Real Madrid after penalty-shootout, with the score being 1-1 in normal time.

Despite a strong starting line-up from Zidane, United looked more in control in the opening exchanges, but the game was being played in a rather slow pace, as the heat of Santa Clara took its toll on the players, who even had to take a water-break on the half-hour mark. Real Madrid bossed the closing minutes of the first half, but found themselves a goal down in added time, as Martial displayed some brilliant skills to finally serve Lingard on a platter to tap in the opener. Both Zidane and Mourinho went for changes for the second half, with Madrid looking more lively than their counterparts. Real finally got back in the game on the 69th minute, following a tackle from Lindelof on Theo in the box. Casemiro stepped up to take the resulting penalty kick, and smashed the ball into the ceiling of the goal past De Gea. United had the chance to win in normal time, but Fellaini missed a very good opportunity, and the game went straight to the shootout.

Martial was first to step up, but blazed his shot over into the crowd. Kovačić was next to step up, but De Gea saved his attempt. McTominay was up for United, and was denied as well as he went for the same spot as Kovačić before him. De Gea was in fine form thou, as he stopped Óscar’s attempt. Mkhitaryan was next to step up for the Red Devils, and this time there was no mistake as he rolled the ball in to wrong-foot Casilla. Quezada for RM followed suit and despite De Gea getting a touch, the ball went in. Lindelof stepped up for MU, but failed to beat Casilla as he went straight at the keeper. Theo then fired well off the mark for RM as the game remained undecided. Blind was up next, and made no mistake as he went straight down the middle (risky of course), and finally Casemiro was sent again to try restore parity, but his shot crashed off the bar, and United emerged victorious.
