Neymar was Manchester United’s executioner on the latter’s last game in the US, as the Barcelona forward grabbed the opportunity presented to him from some bad defensive play, and delivered the killer goal which settled the encounter between the two clubs.
United started brightly and created the first chance on the third minute, but Lukaku failed to hit the target as he stretched to meet the ball. Barcelona were not to be intimated, and replied at the other end as Suarez forced De Gea into a save. Messi then saw a shot fly wide, while Pogba almost caught Cillessen at the other end, but the keeper reacted well to deny him. Neymar was causing the Red Devils more trouble as the game wore on. He was eventually rewarded on the 31st minute, as Valencia lost his footing to gift the ball to Neymar, and the latter found the net this time to open the score. United’s defense was under fire as they struggled to keep up with Barca’s fiery front line. Suarez was the last one to put United under pressure before half-time, but his spectacular scissor-kick was saved by De Gea.
Both teams went for fresh blood for the second half, and Martial went close for United, but not enough to get them back in the game. Alcacer then made the most from United’s bad defending to test Romero, who managed to save. The second half was more a laid-back affair, but the Red Devils were constantly under threat from Barcelona’s second string team, and the Catalans turned out to be deserved winners in the end, while the Red Devils’ fine run in the US came to an abrupt end.
