Manchester United ended the Tour 2017 with a win against Sampdoria last night, with new signing Matic getting in the starting line-up and already looking to impose himself as a leader as he barked orders around and looked composed at the base of midfield.
Mourinho went for a back three for the game, and almost paid the price of this risky formation as De Gea had to claw a wayward backpass off the line from Blind, and it resulted in an indirect free-kick to Sampdoria from the edge of the 6-yard box. Fortunately, the wall did its job, and instead from the resulting counter-attack, United took the lead on the 9th minute. Mkhitaryan nodded the ball in as Darmian sent in a dipping cross. Sampdoria missed a golden chance moments later as Quagliarella’s attempt went wide. Mkhitaryan then missed a chance to double the lead at the other end as United upped the tempo, with Lukaku being next to threaten with a curling effort, but the scoreline remained unchanged till half-time.
As usual, changes were operated at half-time, with United showcasing a new midfield, and were back to 4 at the back. However, a costly mistake by Smalling on the 63rd minute allowed Sampdoria to level via Praet. Chances became rare until the last 15 minutes, as United pressed more and more, and were eventually rewarded on the 81st minute thru’ Mata, as he struck in after a square pass from Martial.
