Jose Mourinho and the Red Devils were ran ragged by a brilliant Real Madrid team, as the Los Blancos proved to be a level too high for their opponents, and claimed the UEFA Super Cup on a 2-1 in Skopje with goals from Casemiro and Isco, while Lukaku could only get a consolation for the Red Devils.
United looked the more settled team at the start of the game, but Madrid gained momentum as the game went on, with Bale going close, then Casemiro rattling the cross-bar with a volley. Madrid were ahead on the 24th minute, as Casemiro volleyed home from 12-yards out, although there was a slight hint of offside from the scorer. Benzema then saw his shot saved by De Gea, while United were unable to fashion out any comeback before half-time.
The second half saw Madrid keep on the pressure as Kroos forced De Gea into a fine save from a free-kick, but the latter was helpless on the 52nd minute as fellow Spanish player Isco found the net following a one-two with Bale to split the defense open. United responded immediately as Pogba forced Navas into a save at the other end, and Lukaku gave United a lifeline on the 62nd minute as he tapped in a loose ball after Navas had parried Matic’s shot. Navas however did well to stop Rashford, while De Gea as well was called into action as Asensio went close. United could not level the score as Madrid held firm to claim their first competitive trophy of the new season, while Mourinho and Co. will have to work harder to match the European giants if they want to leave a mark of their own for the new season.
