Manchester United registered an important win against Chelsea at Old Trafford today as the chase heats up behind them, and Lukaku was a relieved man as it is the first time this season he scored against a team in the top 6, and also provided the assist to Lingard for the winner.
The first half saw Chelsea nearly grab the lead in the opening minutes as Morata saw his volley hit the crossbar with De Gea well beaten. The game then turned into a cat-and-mouse one as both teams looked to threaten on counter-attacks. However the Blues drew first blood on the 32nd minute as Willian and Hazard led the counter-attack, and the latter played a delightful pass to the former to smash home at the near post, with De Gea beaten rather too easily thou as the ball went underneath his left side. United response was not long thou as Lukaku initiated the move, combining with Sanchez and then Martial providing the assist to Lukaku to slot home the equalizer. Chelsea threatened again at the other end but could not find the breakthrough.
The second half saw a change in United’s mentality as they looked more in control with Chelsea subdued for most of the half. Lingard was brought on for Martial and 11 minutes later he was on the scoresheet. Lukaku played some good possession before delivering a pinpoint cross in for Lingard to head home on the 75th minute. Chelsea had a goal wrongly disallowed moments later for what the assistant referee thought was an offside position by Morata, while replays showed he was not. United had a big let off and held on to the single goal advantage to claim the three points.
