Today, all Hindus around the world celebrate Holi, the festival of colors. It symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, and one day before, a bonfire is lit, known as Holika Dahan. This ritual symbolizes the end of an evil being, Holika, who on her brother’s order, Hiranyakashipu, was trying to kill the latter’s son, Prahlad, by sitting in a bonfire, as the son was faithful to God while his father was evil. Holika was believed to be protected from fire by a boon she recieved, but on that very day God saved the small boy and it was Holika who lost her life.
A detailed history about Holi can be found on Wikipedia.
Happy Holi to everyone!!!
